松谷武判(まつたにたけさだ)は1937年に大阪市に生まれる。
ボンド（ビニール系接着剤）を使った作品で具体美術協会の吉原治良に認められ
メンバーとして解散まで活動する。　1966年にフランス政府給費留学生としてパリに
渡り、以降フランスと日本を拠点に諸外国を行き来しながら国際的に活躍する。
近年は2017年のヴェネチアビエンナーレ　VIVA ARTE  VIVAへの招聘出品などますます評価が
高まり、アジアおよび欧米各国の美術館、ギャラリー、アートフェア出品など目覚ましい活動を展開する。
また、来年6月にはパリのポンピドーセンターにて個展が予定されている。　

本展「離見の見 挿絵の仕事」は、2016年12月より産経新聞全国版に連載中の亀岡典子氏のエッセーに
松谷が手掛けた挿絵の原画を中心に、書物にまつわる松谷作品を展覧、松谷の新たな仕事の一面をご紹介するものです。　
「離見の見（りけんのけん）」とは客観的視点の大切さを説いた世阿弥の言葉です。
コラム「離見の見」は、亀岡典子氏（現 特別記者）が産経新聞文化部の記者として長年にわたって取材してきた
古典芸能の名人たちの言葉や舞台を豊かな人生観と深い洞察力で見つめ、綴ったエッセーです。　
新聞の連載コラムの挿絵制作は松谷にとってはじめての挑戦であり、その作画は楽しくてたまらない仕事だったと語ります。
本展に際して既出のエッセーと挿絵を収録した図録「離見の見」（バイリンガル編集）を発行。
松谷氏の描き下ろしドローイングを収めた限定版も発行予定。

Takesada Matsutani was born in Osaka in 1937. Matsutani’s work using vinyl glue was recognised by Jiro Yoshihara of the Gutai Art Association of which he was an active member until its dissolution.  In 1966 he went to Paris with a grant from the French government.  Since then he has been based in Paris and has been active globally visiting numerous different countries.

In recent years he has become more and more highly regarded internationally. He was invited to exhibit at Venezia Biennale “Viva Arte Viva” in 2017 and has been presenting his works to various museums, galleries and art fairs in Asia, Europe and the USA.  Centre Pompidou in Paris will hold his solo exhibition in June next year.

This exhibition “Riken no Ken – the Role of the Illustration” introduces a new aspect of his versatile practices; it focuses on the original illustrations for the series of essays by Noriko Kameoka which have been appearing in the Sankei Newspaper since December 2016. It also shows some works themed on books.

“Riken no Ken” is a phrase used by Zeami that advocates the importance of holding an objective point of view.  The column “Riken no Ken” by Noriko Kameoka (Senior Editor at Sankei Newspaper at present) is a series of essays which have been written from her rich experience and deep insight accumulated over a long period of time as a culture editor reporting on masters of the traditional Japanese arts and their performances.  It was the first time Matsutani was given the challenge of producing illustrations for a column published in a newspaper. This was highly enjoyable for him to undertake while he was working in Paris.

The new catalogue “Riken no Ken” (edited bilingually), including the above essays and illustrations, is published on the occasion of this exhibition.  Also available is a limited edition catalogue which includes a drawing by Matsutani made specially for it.
